RITUAL EXTRA (FR/FI)

Ritual Extra is a French-Finnish ensemble whose music grows from repetitive improvisation. Their starting point is a living, pulsating musical fabric — cells that cling together and drift apart: Tuukka Haapakorpi’s electronically transformed voice, Lauri Hyvärinen’s guitar drones, and Julien Chamla’s screeching cymbals and fragmented rhythms. The ensemble has performed across Finland, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and has collaborated with artists including Jone Takamäki and Olli Aarni.

Ritual Extra’s music has been released by Dinzu Artefacts and NUNC.

ANNA-SOFIA ANTTONEN

Anna-Sofia Anttonen is a curious Helsinki-based saxophonist and composer with a particular interest in the music of our time and various points of intersection. She enjoys exploring the extended possibilities of her instrument and of musical performance, and has given world premieres of works by numerous composers.

Anttonen composes finely tuned, whimsically melancholic electroacoustic music through which she explores the more delicate side of the saxophone’s expression, examining its buzzing and honeyed qualities. Anttonen has collaborated with visual artist Armi Teva to create ceramic Kukkapilli flutes, each with its own unique shape, microtonal scale, and story.

She enjoys arranging works for saxophones from across the ages — spanning thousands of years up to the present day — and has, for example, created new versions of Hildegard of Bingen’s compositions, particularly with the ensemble Saxtronauts. She also works as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician, performing especially at contemporary music festivals.
