Summertime at Something Else sees the first meeting in a very long time of vocalist/flutist Heliä Mailiis Viirakivi and cellist Wilson Tanner Smith for a free-ranging set of improvised music jumping freely across sounds, instruments, and styles.

SOMETHING ELSE is a concert series for improvised music focused on new meetings of musicians from across Helsinki’s free improv, experimental, jazz, electronic, and global music scenes, hosted on the 4th Thursday of each month at Kallio’s Musta Kissa bar. New small-ensemble groupings–often first-time meetings–are highlighted each time, with an emphasis on surprise, difference, curiosity, energy, and connection.

HELIÄ MAILIIS VIIRAKIVI is a dynamic Finnish singer, flutist, improviser, and composer whose work bridges experimental contemporary music, contemporary improvisation, and multidisciplinary artistic practices. Trained at the Helsinki Conservatory and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, she has developed a distinctive artistic voice that integrates extended techniques with diverse vocal styles while remaining firmly grounded in classical vocal technique. Her artistic practice also explores voice–flute performance, developing voiced flute techniques and continually seeking new ways to expand the expressive possibilities of her instruments.
Viirakivi has premiered numerous new works at prominent festivals, including Bled Contemporary Music Week (Slovenia), Barents Spektakel (Norway), Time of Music (Finland), Mixtur (Spain), and Composter (Estonia). Her latest release with Gon Muruaga and Elena Perales explores the subtle movements of improvisation, delicate textures, and detailed articulation, rooted in attentive listening, spatial awareness, and musical communication.

WILSON TANNER SMITH is a cellist, composer, improviser, and theatre artist currently based in Helsinki. His musical sensibility is informed by free improvisation/free jazz, ambient, DIY and found sounds, and by many cross-cultural/-genre collaborations in his former hometown, Chicago, and more recently across northern/western Europe.
