Autumn arrives in Helsinki and with it comes an 18th Something Else: deep and earthy sound explorations across double bass, bass clarinet, and cello, featuring guest artists Jaakko Arola (modified bass clarinet), Aida Salakka (bass, voice), and Wilson Tanner Smith (cello, flutes). Come and gather and cut the crisp evening air with improvised music from this first-time trio meeting of exciting Helsinki experimentalists.

SOMETHING ELSE is a concert series for improvised music focused on new meetings of musicians from across Helsinki’s free improv, experimental, jazz, electronic, and global music scenes, hosted on the 4th Thursday of each month at Kallio’s Musta Kissa bar. New small-ensemble groupings–often first-time meetings–are highlighted each time, with an emphasis on surprise, difference, curiosity, energy, and connection.

JAAKKO AROLA is a musician, improviser, composer and instrument-maker from Finland. Arola plays multiple traditional and western woodwind instruments. His current practice is centred around expanding the acoustic timbral possibilities of the bass clarinet via a combination of extended techniques and handcrafted mouthpieces.

AIDA SALAKKA is a double bassist, vocalist and composer based in Helsinki. She works as a double bassist in different orchestras and ensembles as well as performs her own solo pieces for her voice and double bass. Aida is currently creating new solo music for her solo project LOSS, which is kindly supported by The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.

WILSON TANNER SMITH is a cellist, composer, improviser, and theatre artist currently based in Helsinki. His musical sensibility is informed by free improvisation/free jazz, ambient, DIY and found sounds, and by many cross-cultural/-genre collaborations in his former hometown, Chicago, and more recently across northern/western Europe.
